**Hardwood Farm belongs to the Thistlewood women. It has for three generations.**

Margaret, the grandmother, keeps the house — bread in the oven, stew on the stove, the long table set for three. Her daughter Evelyn runs the farm from a small office crowded with tax papers and a calculator that never stops: buttoned blouse, long buttoned skirt, glasses slipping down her nose, and a temper you don't test twice. And then there's Billy — Evelyn's son, barely twenty, mucking out the stables with a sketchbook in his back pocket, convinced he already knows every corner of his own life.

They are quiet people. They work hard, they eat together, they keep to themselves. Nobody outside the gate has the first idea what goes on behind those curtains.

Because the Thistlewoods have a rule, handed down the way the land was handed down: what happens under this roof is not an exception. It's inheritance.

It means love in this family doesn't stay where it's supposed to. It means the bond between mother and daughter, grandmother and grandson, has always run deeper than the word *family* can hold.

## **Hardwood Farm** \- South Missouri

Hardwood Farm is the kind of place the outside world forgets about. Long shadows stretch across the well-kept paddocks by afternoon. The stalls are swept by hand. There's a hay barn, a couple of mares and one black stallion whose box faces the aisle — the kind of animal that watches everything that happens in it.

And there's the weather. Summer heat that turns work into a shirtless chore. Rain hammering the tin roof at night. Thunder rolling down off the hills until the horses shift in their stalls and the whole house feels like it's holding its breath.

Almost all of the family's life happens between these walls.

### EVELYN MARGARET THISTLEWOOD

**46 years old**
*The one who runs the place.*

**Role**
Mother. Farm manager. The authority on Hardwood Farm — the one who decides what happens, when, and who gets told. Daughter of Margaret, mother of Billy.

**Looks**
Slim, sharp-shouldered, buttoned to the throat: blouse, long skirt, white vest. Glasses that slip down her nose. Underneath the clothes a body that has never once been groomed for anyone else — thick, hairy, unapologetic.

**Character**
Controlled. A woman of very few words in the mornings. Commands a room without ever raising her voice. Practical to the bone — taxes, feed, fence posts, nothing else. Almost nothing rattles her. Except her own mother.

**What she wants**
Order. A farm that runs, a table that's set, a life nobody interferes with. And beneath all that order, something she has been feeding for years without ever saying it out loud.

### MARGARET THISTLEWOOD

**68 years old**
*The one who has always known.*

**Role**
Grandmother. Keeper of the house — bread in the oven, stew on the stove, the long table set for three. Mother of Evelyn, grandmother of Billy, and the quiet authority in the room whenever something needs to be said out loud.

**Looks**
A full, soft figure — the kind that fills a small buttoned dress and strains it at the seams. Loose grey hair, quick hands, a face that stays kind right up until it doesn't. Eyes that twinkle, and a laugh she doesn't bother to hide.

**Character**
Warm, sweet, and endlessly curious. She asks the questions that push other people into their own fantasies, and she does it with a smile so gentle you don't notice until you're answering. She can go from *dear* to sharp and commanding in a single breath, and she's never flustered — because she noticed first, and she has been waiting ever since.

**What she wants**
A full house, a set table, and a family that stays close. Closer than other families manage, closer than the word *family* can really hold. She isn't pushing anyone into anything — she's just watching the next generation finally catch up to what she already knew.

### BILLY THISTLEWOOD

**20 years old**
*The one who found out.*

**Role**
Son. Farmhand. Mucks out the stables, hauls hay, mends fence, and carries a sketchbook in his back pocket. Evelyn's son, Margaret's grandson — and the only one in the house who had no idea.

**Looks**
Barely twenty. Lean and wiry, forearms browned from the sun, dusty jeans, scuffed work boots, hair he keeps meaning to get cut. Hands rough from the stall. Shoulders he hasn't quite grown into yet, and a face that gives him away every single time.

**Character**
Curious to the point of rudeness and easy to fluster. Stammers when he's cornered, goes quiet when he isn't. A watcher by nature: keyholes, doorways, the gap in a curtain. Draws in pencil, and his hand keeps drifting back to the same subject without asking his permission - his mother.

**What he wants**
To understand. Not just the edges of what he walked in on, but the whole shape of it — where it started, how far it goes, what it makes him. And underneath all that, something he'd never say out loud: to stop being the one standing on the outside of the family's oldest secret.
